    • A maturing talent reinvents the form

This is stunning in its (largely) understated complexity and sophistication. It is a substantial development musically from this trio's last recording ("Alloy" ) augmented by thrilling use of percussion and some discreet electronica. Sorey's indebtedness to the work of Classicist and innovator Morton Feldman is once again felt but much less of an overt homage than in his compendium of student compositions "That/Not". It feels to flow in terms of ideas out of his last recorded piece "The Inner Spectrum of Variables" but in trio not double trio form. Less musically complex than that work, it's a strongly coherent musical conversation owing more in colour to the Eastern timbre of his early Buddhist themed work "Koan". Stunning. We are fortunate to be witnessing the emergence of an important musical talent and a powerful, creative trio of musicians comfortable within Sorey's diverse vocabulary of musical styles and forms, from jazz, to world and classical.
