Don't agree with the reviews at all. You'd be hard pressed to find a tighter or more talented rhythm section than Chambers and Grainger. Scofield's playing combined with their backing on Otay and Igetthepicture is untouchable. Dance Me Home, Signature of Venus ARE memorable melodies and also highlights for Chambers drumming. Wabash is a nasty, nasty song as is Scofield's solo. It is a late date (1987) for electric jazz and most of that genre had went into the toilet by then, but this record is good. In order to get the full effect - PLAY IT LOUD!!!

Although this album has not been gathering great reviews, if you judge it within the context of when it was made, I believe it makes a strong statement musically. This is what I appreciate about Scofield back then- he was trying to do something fresh and original, and when it came out (in the late 80's) I hadn't heard anything like it. As a guitar player, I still am very inspired by the musicianship, and Scofield's supporting cast are strong, especially Dennis Chambers. True, a few of the cuts are a bit flat in terms of the songwriting, but tracks like "Wabash" and "Tell You What" make up for any dull spots, in my book anyway.
Ehh... Take it or leave it.

Scofield, undoubtedly, writes some great stuff. I found "Loud Jazz" all in all to be rather boring and repetitive. It didn't offer anything moving or all that fun. The playing was great, some of the music was okay, but this album simply didn't do it for me, and really didn't come all that close either. It's nice music to have on while browsing the web or as background music at a club or something, but it's not really music by itself. It was very incomplete and unpolished. I give it a 5 or 6 of ten. I did like the first tune "Tell You What." That was very alive and interesting. If your looking for some real, decent melodic music, don't go for this record. But, if you want some chill music or something of that nature, this is a cool album for you.
