This is a great Monk album. 4 1/2 Stars. Monk's playing sounds great. The arrangements are pretty good. The energy is there. It's nice to hear these tunes in a Big Band setting. The reviewer doesn't know what he's saying.

This is an exemplary recording, a Thelonious Monk classic, and the only time he ever made a record with a big band. The incredible orchestra breathes new life into familiar monk tunes, and it is a fascinating listen, with Monk himself leading the proceedings through his banging, rhythmic piano work. The itunes review is ridiculous--I'm sure he or she has made wonderful jazz albums--not!

You have to be kidding! How could an arranger as good as Oliver Nelson, take the life out of Monks classics?
    • Definitely Recommended!

This album has a ton of great songs and they're all very traditional -- traditional in a good sense of the way jazz should be played. I'm not sure if Monk is underrated, but he's certainly up to par with the jazz greats! Worth the buy :)
