    • They redeemed themselves

The black album is one album that I think Metallica pushed trying to compete with Nirvana. The opening song, man, gets me every time with that drum intro. Why are we getting a re-release of this album for a dollar more, they may have bumped the price on this after I bought it. I think this era of metal is one that not much talk about.

Load is the album that truly angers Metallica’s diaper baby fan base, because there is no sign of the band they were before on it. It’s grunge-metal that’s very dirty sounding despite the obvious attempt to cash in on grunge’s success. Creatively it’s very much a risk-taker but sticking mostly to a mixture of southern-like rock and straightforward metal akin to Motörhead. It’s not bad because most 90’s popular music was great including rap, so I have a hard time really disliking the album all in all. Some tracks are better than others, some kind of repetitive and not having much direction, others really great. I definitely agree that it doesn’t hold up against its five predecessors, because those changed heavy metal forever and by 1996, there wasn’t anything to change in metal anymore because glam metal was dead and buried and thus thrash had done its job. With bands like Pantera and various death metal groups pushing the envelope at this point, why would anyone have expected Metallica to perform miracles when they had basically did everything they could have done in their scene? It’s not like they sound awful in this form, because they still had some things that still make this album a Metallica album nonetheless. You want to hear a thrash legend really sound terrible simplifying their music? go listen to Risk by Megadeth. Now THAT is awful, because they truly sold out to the point Dave Mustaine wishes it wasn’t under Megadeth’s name (I do like Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia though).

I know Metallica doesn’t really like Load because it felt forced upon them, but dang, they really made some good music!

Until it sleeps, King Nothing, and Hero of the day are the best. This was kinda a step down from the black album, but still good songs on it

By and far their most unique sounding album. Not a bad track on here and I hope they revisit the stylings of Load/Reload in the future.

Might not be heavy like what they’re known for, but it’s still one of the most underrated albums ever
