In an increasingly crowded field -- including new releases by Wayne Shorter, Chris Potter and Joe Lovano -- Mr. Mahanthappa has produced my my favorite album of 2013. This is intelligent yet heartfelt music, prog jazz with a strong human pulse. The contributions of each of the band members are present and accounted for, from the tasteful, crisp drumming to the astonishing guitar riffs and runs. The sax fits nicely in the mix, nestled among the rhythm players' funky grooves, and fervently pushing the music forward. This band should do a live album, now.
